Is there anything more magical than cracking open a $10 bottle of wine, turning on the same movie you've seen approx. 65 times, and having a hearty laugh or a lengthy cry with your best friends? Personally, I think that's what heaven might look like!
Color me delusional, but I think as women it's important for us to live lives that are worthy of the big screen. And the special thing about the summer season is that everything feels possible. Traveling to new destinations, falling in love, and making memories to stuff your photo albums with.
I've compiled four movies that I think scream *SUMMER* and are a testament to living the life worthy of a main character. So whether these simply become an option at your next movie night or you self-actualize enough to end up staring out the window of a plane headed for Greece, I'll have done my job.
Mamma Mia!
IT IS DONNA SHERIDAN SUMMER!
I REPEAT IT IS DONNA SHERIDAN SUMMER! Ideally, without the accidental pregnancy and the desperate need for a paternity test... But everything else, yes! Overalls, boats, love affairs, best friends, passport stamps, and randomly bursting out into ABBA whenever you see fit. In the wise, wise, words of young Donna:
"Life is short, the world is wide, I wanna make some memories."
Hell yeah.
The Notebook
Now if you are somebody with a beating heart and a pulse, you've sobbed to this movie.
Two young lovers separated by classism and war who find their way back to each other after seven years and then die next to each other when they are old and wrinkly? You are one sick bastard Nicholas Sparks.
This movie screams summer to me for a myriad of reasons. Noah and Allie first meet and fall in love in the small southern town of Seabrook during the summer of 1940. And although the ending is pretty gut-wrenching, I think this movie gives everyone a sense of hopefulness and restores the whimsy in romance.
In the modern world of ghosting, love-bombing, nudes, exclusivity vs. official, social media, and swiping left or right, The Notebook gives everyone a gentle pat on the back that their Allie or Noah is still out there. Don't settle for bullsh*t.
Someone Great
I do solemnly believe that the only women that don't feel seen or heard by this movie, are simply just ones that haven't seen it yet.
The Netflix original "Someone Great" starring Gina Rodriguez, DeWanda Wise, and Brittany Snow has seen me through more mental breakdowns than I can count. Seriously, I should start keeping a tab.
It shows the all-too-familiar demise of when you know a relationship is over, tripping over your steps on the path to healing, and reminding you of who is always inherently there for you: your bestfriends.
Call Me By Your Name
Yeah so this movie rocked my entire world.
Locked away in the deep dark depths of my Snapchat memories are a series of pictures of me sobbing and crashing out over what love really means and all of it's complexities. And that was way before I had ever fall into it!
First of all, this movie is what aesthetically pleasing dreams are made of. The Italian countryside, fruit trees, linen shirts, and a scientifically study-able amount of built-up romantic tension between two beautiful men.
Second of all, it captures the essence of the point I've been trying to make: summer is the season for possibilities.
Ladies, You Are Enough. And so is your taste in movies!
XO,
Ava
